A World Without Racism is Equal

Acting for Change In Terms of Equality

In today’s world, Acting for change in terms of e quality, whether it be through simple acts of encouragement, educating friends and family, speaking up on social media, or some other way. That being said, the noise surrounding equality makes it hard to fully understand what it looks like and how we can help support each other to become truly equal. This begs the question – what does it mean to act for change? Acting for equality means:

Supporting women and minorities in politics:

The youth of today are leaders of tomorrow. The youth in this country needs role models to look up to – ones that look like them so they can see themselves as leaders, activists, and revolutionaries. Today, there is a lack of minorities and women in the political sphere, and there is a lack of support to help them achieve leadership positions. It is nearly impossible to empower the youth of color and young women to see themselves as leaders capable of meaningful change when only a fraction of today’s political leaders look like them.

Making sure everyone is being treated the way you would like to be treated

Minorities and women tend to be underrepresented, undervalued, underestimated, and underpaid. Women and people of color play key roles in several sectors and fields in this country but yet are paid less simply because of their gender or race. “Your work and effort means less than that of an average white male in this country” – is that the message we want to send to those who are discriminated against? When people in power are not questioned, when the communities that hold power do not question, when there are vast portions of the country being mistreated and underpaid, there is no equality. Striving for real equality means speaking out against injustices and sticking together to make sure everyone is being treated the same.

Promoting actions that extend the freedom to practice basic human rights to everyone.

Feminist activism is a reaction to the gender inequality women face every day. The Black Lives Matter movement is a reaction to years of racial inequality. Both of these are reactions to the lack of basic human rights – the lack of true equality. These movements are simply trying to redress an imbalance in today’s society – to right a wrong. You do not have to agree with or support the individual actions of these activists or organizations in order to understand and recognize the foundation of the issue – the need for basic human rights for everyone regardless of race or gender. We can all play a part in ensuring that our fellow human beings have the same rights.

Uplifting all narratives

Acting for equality means advocating for any group or individual whose voices aren’t being heard. Acting for change means advocating for ethnic minorities, women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ communities. When we pick and choose which of these communities to advocate for, or turn a blind eye to one group, we are not striving towards an equal society or nation. We need to be able to see past these labels and boundaries that divide us and recognize that we are all just human. All of our voices are needed in order to create a world where we all want to live in and feel safe in. No individual or community deserves to be treated unfairly, and it is our personal responsibility to do our part in creating meaningful change.
