Inclusion
School
Inclusiveness in schools can sound similar to diversity in schools, but these terms do not have equal meaning. Inclusiveness not only means there is diverse representation from as many groups as possible, but it also means members of these groups share equal involvement and importance. Inclusive education has many components, some of which differ from conventional education beliefs held by schools.
Inclusive education means that students, regardless of background, are learning together. In addition to learning together, an inclusive education program promotes inclusivity outside the classroom at after-school events and extracurricular activities.

Many benefits accompany inclusive education. According to resilientducator.com, a 2010 study showed a wide range of benefits for all students in inclusive learning environments. Some of the most substantial academic improvements in inclusive learning environments are experienced by students with disabilities. The previously mentioned study concluded that students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms had improved academic performance in literacy, math, and social studies. It was also determined that students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms had fewer absences and referrals for disruptive behavior.

In the above study, the benefits of inclusive classrooms are not limited to students with disabilities. The same study concluded that students without disabilities in inclusive classrooms had more positive attitudes toward school subjects and experienced academic improvements themselves. This challenges the current standard for students with disabilities in schools, in which said students are all in the same class together, somewhat isolated from students without disabilities.
To implement changes in the classroom, to create a more inclusive learning environment, certain steps must be taken. According to opensocietyfoundations.org, here are several changes that can be made in schools to better promote inclusivity:
- Use teaching assistants or specialists. Assistants and specialists can provide help toward students with disabilities, if needed. They can also provide additional information or context in certain areas to aid students in the learning process.
- Use an inclusive curriculum. An inclusive curriculum includes a greater range of topics, including relevant contributions from marginalized and minority groups. This helps to eliminate large gaps in learning created by close-minded education systems.
- Promote parental involvement. Parental involvement must extend beyond emails and phone calls. Parents with applicable knowledge or experiences could share said experiences with students in the classroom.

In addition to these steps, inclusive education must be advanced by securing financial support for schools and involving the community in the quality of the education. After-all, education quality directly impacts the future of a community.
Inclusiveness in schools is a simple and effective way to improve students’ education, while also improving their views on minority groups and the community.
