Love

School

Within a school setting, love must be present in order for students to receive the nurturing experience that they need. Jabiz Raisdana, also known as the Intrepid Teacher, made a wonderful analogy using plants in his farewell speech to his eighth-grade students. He stated that in order to grow a plant that is fruitful and viable, there are many variables that must go in. It is not just the fact that the basics, such as the sun, water, and nutrients, that are needed must be present. There is much more to those basics than that. You need to make sure that the soil is not too wet nor too dry for the plant when you water it, you must place the plant in locations where they get the optimal amount of sunshine that they need so that it is not too little nor too much, you must prune your plant, and so forth.

The complexity is intensified even more so when there are a variety of plants added into the equation. Within a school setting, this relates to students being individualized, and not all of them having standard needs and desires. He said that “some plants need water every day, while others prefer drought. Some plants will vine and weave and grab onto anything they can attach to, while others prefer to grow alone in their pot. Some plants will wither with the slightest neglect, and will spring back to life with a little attention, while others will ignore everything you do,” and this statement is so pertinent to students. It is very much so true that some students require a lot more love and attention than others, but at the end of the day all students, even the ones that act like they do not, truly need to be loved, cared for, and nurtured.

Love

Love is a powerful word and it is a word that is not used much within the school setting. In the context of school, love can have many synonyms such as kindness, honesty, respect, and compassion in addition to the standard associations of caring and nurturing that are involved with the word. When there is love within a school setting, people tend to feel like they belong, that they are safe, that they can open up and be themselves, they feel happy. Having read this, having thought about it, I encourage you all to spread love. To make an effort to surround yourselves and others in this love so that everyone feels like they belong.
