Respect
Environment
Respect for nature and community are two pieces of the same puzzle, particularly since the condition of the environment can have life changing ramifications for all people. The consumption of fossil fuels have only accelerated the degradation of the environment, leading to atypical and unpredictable changes in weather and climate. Agrarian communities are affected by ever worsening drought, while coastal regions experience worsening floods. Human attempts to mitigate these climate changes have largely been unsuccessful, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Respect
Environment
Pollution in the environment not only affects the water, plants, and animals, but human health as well. Given that millions of Americans live with poor air quality, and even higher numbers coming from countries like China and India, the role the environment plays in human health is substantial. Not merely limited to the external environment, the air quality indoors can also play a significant role in human health. Poor indoor air quality is a common cause of health conditions like asthma, according to the EPA.
Respect
Environment
Maintaining a stable and healthy environment not only preserves human health, but ensures there are enough natural resources to help sustain the entire ecosystem. Tropical rainforests are lush with exotic plant and animal life. Many important plants, used in medicine and cuisine, can only grow in tropical areas with fertile soil. Excessive farming and deforestation in these tropical forests harms biodiversity, soil quality, tourism, and future prospects for many tropical countries. Without this respect for nature, future resources will cease to exist.
Respect
Environment
A stronger connection to nature can have many positive effects on quality of life. Preserving nature and biodiversity can help encourage curiosity about nature for future generations. Recreational opportunities like hiking trails, rivers to kayak in, and campgrounds to create memories in are all irreplaceable parts of nature. Not only does this access to nature create happiness in people, but it provides a setting for communities to form. Time spent enjoying nature can also be considered time taken away from unproductive activity, like crime, leading to safer communities.
Respect
Environment
The inherent value of nature for wisdom sake cannot be understated. For centuries, philosophers and writers have used nature as a way to see the world in a more grand sense. By experiencing the wisdom nature has to offer, one can begin to see the world as an ecosystem with near-limitless parts. This new viewpoint often gives people a new appreciation and respect for nature, as it is no longer viewed as a resource for humanity, but rather a companion. Nature is what makes living possible, and without respecting nature, the countless benefits we receive will slowly dwindle away.
