Listening
Friends
Friendships tend to be the place where we feel like we can be ourselves and talk about anything, or so they should if it is a true, genuine, deep friendship. Did you know though that listening to your friends is just as important as talking to them? When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Of course, we love to have someone to pour our hearts to and receive advice, but friendships should be two-way and equal in both directions. Both parties in the friendship must be able to talk and listen otherwise it is a one-ended deal. Interestingly enough, you can be a good listener by actually starting a conversation. Of course, this depends on the situation and on the specific relationship between two friends, but there are times and topics which can be hard for the person to randomly bring up even though they want to talk to you about it. You can initiate the conversation by giving them this avenue of discussion, but also making sure to remain in the position of the listener and letting them talk.

It is also crucial to be patient and to let them speak. It is important to know boundaries and to not be pushy. Do not pressure your friend into talking about anything they do not want to, but be ready and willing to listen to them when they are ready to open up about things. When you respect them and show them that they are in control of what they share, when they share it, and that it is safe with you, they will trust you more and be willing to come to you as their confidant more and more. It is important to show your support by not only actively listening to your friend but also keeping things from spreading out to others. Trust and respect are key here.

Likewise, be considerate about what they say. Make sure that your body language and nonverbal cues match the vibe of the conversation by actively listening to them and being engaged in the conversation. Similarly, make sure to watch their body language and notice their nonverbal cues to be able to pick up on things that are not said and to adjust your conversation accordingly. Do not be judgmental and do not jump to conclusions. Also, make sure to be as comforting and supportive as you can be, and if they want to hear advice from you, make sure you fully listen to them before you start to come up with ideas. Do not get distracted mid-conversation. You can also show that you are actively listening by asking questions when and where appropriate. This can show them that you are there for them and interested in what they are saying to you.
Listening
Friends
Overall it is important to remember that friendship is about the connection between people and that it is a reciprocated thing. Make sure that the needs of all parties are met, and think of the other person in terms of if you were in their shoes. Do what helps make your friendship flourish and grow.
