A World Without Racism is Grateful
The Power Gratitude Possesses
We have the power to change the world for the better with a tool we rarely use from our arsenal – gratitude. Gratitude is one of the most underused tools in our possession, as we often do not think of it as something powerful. That being said, gratitude is most definitely something that can be used to help ourselves, our friends, our community, and those who need it the most.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and UC Berkeley have all agreed that gratitude is a useful tool in making the world a better place. Pennsylvania’s Dr. Martin E.P. Spiegelman discussed in his findings that when people express gratitude to one another, their kindness score increases the most, and as we know kindness leads to compassion which leads to other things such as equality. Gratitude that is expressed to let people know that they matter and their work is appreciated can be powerful in ending racism. This is so because gratitude helps a person see that they are loved and appreciated, and the fight for equality becomes stronger by people uniting together and forming bonds. Gratitude bolsters self-worth, making it harder for others to push back against equality. Improving one’s gratitude increases their self-worth through kindness. To fight racism, we need to strengthen the self-worth of our community and promote equality.

One might wonder how we can express more gratitude in the quest to fight against racism, as such, we have laid out some suggestions that have been found to have success:
- Gratitude can be expressed through intangible actions such as simply saying thank you to the people around you, such as to the cashier. This form of gratitude allows individuals to block out negative toxic traits and thoughts. Saying thank you and showing your appreciation towards your community members helps build a bond and shows that you care for one another. In turn, that bond is useful in uniting us in the fight against racism because if we are not united, we fall apart, and those who are against the fight for equality can prevail.
- Providing gifts as a physical form of gratitude allows us to enjoy the present. We live in a world where we can see more negativity rather than positivity, as such, we should express gratitude to each other to block out that negativity and create a source of joy. Expressing gratitude allows us to live in the present and will help bring positivity which will then allow changes to come about because we do better when we are happier.
- Expressing gratitude in stressful situations makes us more resilient to stress. Numerous studies have shown that in times of stress, adversity, and trauma, if we show gratitude and find joy in little things, we tend to recover more quickly. When we support one another, we show that we are there for each other. This allows us to unite with each other in times when we are down and helps us unite when we need support.
There are many ways to show gratitude, and it helps us unite and end racism. We need to express gratitude to each other so that we can outweigh the toxicity and the negativity from those who are against equality.
