A World Without Racism is Inclusive
What Is Inclusiveness And Why Does It Matter?
Inclusion most likely has always been a topic of conversation within your organization or social setting, yet it still remains to be a work in progress. Many people assume that if we are diverse then we are inclusive, but that is not necessarily true. Inclusivity isn’t something that can be measured, it is a way of thinking. It is shown through actions and words rather than through data. In other words, inclusivity encompasses how one carries themselves.
Here are a few ideas as to where to start when aiming to create a more inclusive environment:

Everyone has a subconscious bias or a “natural bias”. Without even realizing it we are prone to this way of thinking. It is not intentional, therefore, we most likely don’t even notice when it is affecting our behavior. These biases tend to be a result of our upbringing and/or culture. Thus, we might act in biased or discriminatory ways, even though we don’t mean to. People typically assume that in order to create a more inclusive environment, drastic changes need to occur. Although this isn’t necessarily wrong, there are other ways through which we can make progress that involve smaller steps that are easier to implement. This is why acknowledging where our unconscious biases lie and making intentional changes to get rid of them, is the best place to start. Another great step towards creating a more inclusive environment is through reviewing your standard emails. The next time you go to send out your daily emails, take a minute to check for any discriminatory messages, tones, or wording. You may be surprised by what you find.

When we allow our employees, family members, or peers to express their passions within their environment, whether that be a cubicle, bedroom, or desk, we are non-verbally communicating that they are accepted for who they are. That being said, it is advised that this is done within reason. If someone decides to display inappropriate images or slogans, that might need to be censored.

So how do we know if our efforts are truly making a change? As mentioned earlier, inclusivity isn’t something that can be measured, rather it is felt in the overall tone of an atmosphere. Additionally, it can be seen and felt through the behaviors and words of those involved. Open dialogue is encouraged no matter what kind of environment you are trying to make more inclusive. Through consistent feedback and communication, we can all work together to create a more inclusive world for everyone.
